How To Safely Clean and Store Your Fresh Eggs

Eggs that are not thoroughly cleaned can cause human illness. Salmonella, a disease associated with poultry, can also be passed through contaminated shells. Dirty shells contaminate clean cooking areas, kitchen utensils, food, or hands. Eggs have small pores which harmful bacteria can enter.

It is crucial to ensure that our eggs are properly cleansed prior to consumption.

Step 1:  Gently rinse the eggs under warm water

It's crucial to avoid using cold water as it can actually facilitate the transfer of bacteria into the egg. Ensure the water temperature is between 90° and 120°F. Take each egg individually and give it a quick rinse under running water. No need to soak them.

Step 2: Optional:  WASH WITH THE "GOOD EGG" Natural enzymatic egg cleaner

To use, pre-rinse the egg with warm water, then pump the cleanser directly into the GoodEgg® Brush. Work up a good lather all over the egg, rinse thoroughly with warm water, and repeat the process as necessary. Because eggshells are highly porous, using standard dish soaps, scented body washes, or harsh detergents can actually leach chemicals through the shell and ruin the taste (or safety) of the egg.

Step 3:  Store or consume the eggs promptly

If you don't plan on consuming the eggs immediately, it's best to store them in the refrigerator. And here's a pro tip: when placing the eggs in the carton, position them pointy-side down and round-side up. This will help center the yolks and maintain their freshness for a longer period.

Step 4:  Maintain cleanliness by washing hands and work area

Even after cleaning the eggs, it's essential to wash your hands thoroughly and sanitize the sink to remove all contamination.
